ABSTRACT

An important class of materials found throughout the natural world is comprised of porous media, which are multiphase materials typically composed of a solid-phase matrix and void space that allow a mobile/liquid phase to penetrate through the material.  The dynamics of fluid flow through porous media  captures  interest  across  a  broad  spectrum  of  disciplines.   Understanding  the  fundamental properties  of  fluid  flows  in  porous  media,  which  hold  an  apposite  blend  of  basic  mathematical challenges and important applications in geophysics, biophysics and technology, offers insight into a diverse range of phenomenon such as oil recovery [1], carbon capture and storage in underground reservoirs  [2],  chromatography  separation  [3],  or  internal  rheology  of  biological  cell  tissue  [4].   In this talk, we will discuss Saffman-Taylor (ST) fingering, which is a hydrodynamic instability that is  observed  when  a  less  viscous  fluid  displaces  a  more  viscous  one  in  a  porous  media.   We  will particularly  concentrate  on  the  cases,  when  the  fluids  are  miscible  and  neutrally  buoyant.   The inherent nonlinearity of the model partial differential equations inhibits analytical solutions.  Based on a Fourier pseudo-spectral method, we investigate miscible ST fingering relevant to a wide range of applications, such as contaminant transport, oil recovery, chromatography separation to name a few [5, 6].

BIOGRAPHY

Satyajit Pramanik is a Nordita postdoc at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (NORDITA), Stockholm, Sweden. He  did  his M.Sc. in Mathematics from IIT Kharagpur (2011) and obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (Fluid Dynamics) from IIT Ropar (2016), he work on various interdisciplinary research problems in close collaboration with mathematicians, physicists, and geophysicists, among others. His  research methodology transforms questions from life, medical and physical sciences into a mathematical framework and analyze them using a wide range of modern mathematical methods.

The broad areas of his research include numerical methods for partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, hydrodynamic stability theory, transport in porous media, mathematical modeling, asymptotic methods & perturbation techniques.
