SUMMARY:[CLOUD SEMINAR] Enabling Resilient Cyber-Physical-Human-Infrastruct
 ures: Prof. Nalini Venkatasubramanian\, USA \, 6 Nov @ 4PM\, CDS102
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCLOUD COMPUTING SEMINAR SERIES\n\n\n\nTITLE: Enabling Resil
 ient Cyber-Physical-Human-Infrastructures\n\nSPEAKER: Prof. Nalini Venkata
 subramanian\, University of California\, Irvine\, USA\n\nDATE/TIME: Nov 06
 \, 2024\, 4:00 PM\n\nVENUE: #102 CDS Seminar Room\n\n\n\nABSTRACT\nAdvance
 s in the Internet-of-Things\, edge-to-cloud technologies and AI-driven dat
a analytics have spurred the creation of smart communities and a variety o
f smart city applications. New modalities of information and new channels
of communication can support the interconnection of physical components\,
software systems\, data\, and humans to provide novel services that enrich
the lives of citizens and build resilience to unexpected events/disasters
. In this talk\, we will discuss our recent experiences with deploying eme
rging technologies for societal scale resilience - from smart assisted liv
ing facilities for the elderly\, smart firefighting in urban high-rises\,
to robust city-scale water infrastructure systems. In particular\, we high
light the role of data as we seek to design and operate these systems at s
cale and under duress. We illustrate how data originating from multiple so
urces at different layers (geophysical\, built infrastructure\, cyber-plat
forms and human sources) must be collected and exchanged over heterogeneou
s networks. We will discuss challenges in generating higher level semantic
observations from the gathered data by composing model-driven and AI-driv
en methods – paving the way for resilient communities of the future.\n\n
BIO\nNalini Venkatasubramanian is currently a Professor in the School of I
nformation and Computer Science at the University of California Irvine. Sh
e has had significant research and industry experience in the areas of dis
tributed systems\, adaptive middleware\, pervasive and mobile computing\,
cyberphysical systems\, distributed multimedia and formal methods and has
over 350 publications in these areas. As the Co-Director of the Center for
Emergency Response Technologies at UC Irvine\, Nalini's recent research h
as focused on enabling resilient\, sustainable and scalable observation an
d analysis of situational information from multiple input sources\; dynami
c adaptation of the underlying systems to enable information flow under ma
ssive failures and the dissemination of rich notifications to members of t
he public at large. She is the recipient of the prestigious NSF Career Awa
rd\, multiple Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Awards and best paper awar
ds. Prof. Venkatasubramanian has served in numerous steering and organizin
g committees of conferences on middleware\, distributed computing and cybe
rphysical systems and on the editorial boards of journals. She received an
d M.S and Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Illinois in Urba
na-Champaign. Her research has been supported both by government and indus
 trial sources such as NSF\, DHS\, ONR\, DARPA\, NIST\, NASA\, DOE\, Novell
\, Hewlett-Packard and Nokia. Prior to arriving at UC Irvine\, Nalini was
a Research Staff Member at the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto\,
California.\n\nHost: Prof. Jayant Haritsa &amp\; Prof. Yogesh Simmhan (CD
S)\n\nAbout: The IBM-IISc Hybrid Cloud Lab (IIHCL) hosted at IISc is curat
ing the Cloud Computing Seminar series with guest speakers from Industry a
nd Academia speaking about the latest technologies and research on Cloud a
nd edge computing\, distributed computing systems\, and AI/ML/Big Data pla
tforms. More details at: http://iihcl.iisc.ac.in .\n\n\n\nALL ARE WELCOME
