 \n\n\n\nABSTRACT :\nThe performance of a database system depends on variou
 s tuning decisions\, ranging from the choice of auxiliary data structures 
 to the settings of system parameters. Such choices have a dramatic impact 
 on data processing performance\, motivating methods seeking optimal or nea
 r-optimal solutions in large search spaces. In this talk\, I will discuss 
 recent and ongoing research in the Cornell Database Group\, aimed at lever
 aging two technologies that have recently become available for database tu
 ning problems. In the first part of my talk\, I will discuss how large lan
 guage models can help to tune database systems at a fraction of the cost o
 f traditional methods\, serving as powerful heuristics for pruning tuning 
 options. In the second part of my talk\, I will discuss methods to use fas
 t hardware accelerators for optimization\, in particular digital and quant
 um annealers\, to explore large search spaces efficiently.\n\nBIO:\nImmanu
 el Trummer is an associate professor of computer science at Cornell Univer
 sity. His research focuses on making data analysis more efficient and more
  user-friendly. His papers were selected for "Best of VLDB"\, "Best of SIG
 MOD"\, and the CACM Research Highlight Award. He received an NSF CAREER gr
 ant for his work on database tuning via LLMs and multiple Google Faculty R
