Congratulations to our CDS PhD students Nishant Gupta and Aritra Roy Choudhury on their selection for the LOTUS programmes, respectively.

These programmes promote research collaboration between India and Japan by supporting talented Indian graduate students to undertake research exchanges at leading Japanese universities. The research projects will be jointly supervised by faculty members from both countries. Nishant Gupta, a PhD student in the MATRIX Lab, will be hosted at the University of Tsukuba under the LOTUS-ASPIRE programme. His research will focus on developing computational methods that integrate statistical fluid theory into finite-element-based density functional theory (DFT). These developments aim to enable large-scale, first-principles simulations of electrochemical systems in solvated environments, extending beyond the length scales accessible to existing methodologies.

The project will be jointly supervised by Prof. Phani Motamarri (India) and Prof. Minoru Otani (Japan). Aritra Roy Choudhury, a PhD student in the FLAME Lab, will be hosted at Kyoto University under the LOTUS programme. His research will investigate the influence of turbulence and preferential diffusion on the internal flame structure in hydrogen-fuelled swirl burners, with applications to the decarbonisation of gas turbines. The study aims to establish a physics-informed, data-driven framework for predicting the onset of flame flashback. The project will be jointly supervised by Prof. Konduri Aditya (India) and Profs. Ryoichi Kurose and Abhishek Pillai (Japan).
