The Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) welcomes its new Chair of the Department, Prof. R. Venkatesh Babu, who takes over from Prof. Sashikumaar Ganesan from Jan 1, 2024. Prof. Babu has been a faculty at IISc since 2010, and is renowned for his expertise on Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Video Analytics. He has also held prior positions at NTU, Singapore, NTNU, Norway and IRISA/INRIA, Rennes, France. He has many recognitions to his credit, including the SERB-STAR Award in 2020, Satish Dhawan Young Engineer award from the Government of Karnataka in 2019, and an impressive research record at top AI venues. We look ahead to his leadership and vision to take CDS to greater accomplishments.
The department is also grateful to Prof. Sashikumaar Ganesan for his service as the Department Chair since 2018. During his tenure, he has welcomed 8 new faculty, established a state-of-the-art data centre, and significantly improved the CDS infrastructure. He also ably navigated the department during the COVID lockdown and the subsequent resumption. He continues to serve as a professor in the department.
