Title: FinTech Solutions in Payments: Stablecoins and Wholesale CBDC

Abstract:
This talk presents a central banker’s perspective on the ongoing global innovations in money, particularly in the areas of stablecoins and wholesale central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). These developments remain a key focus of research and monitoring at institutions such as the BIS, IMF, and central banks worldwide. The session will share preliminary insights on these innovations and invite discussion on their implications. In addition, it will address emerging concerns such as fraud and scams in the financial ecosystem, highlighting the critical challenges central banks face in combating these issues. These areas are high on policy agendas yet lack clear strategies for resolution.
Bio of Speaker:
Srichander Ramaswamy is the Director of Financial Stability, Supervision, and Payment Systems at the SEACEN Centre. His career spans academia, research, and industry across multiple countries. He has held faculty and research positions at institutions such as the National Institute of Technology (Trichy, India), Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Technical University of Berlin (Germany), and the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). Srichander’s professional experience includes roles at Lucas TVS (Chennai), Aeronautical Development Agency and Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (Bangalore), Credit Suisse (Zurich), Bank for International Settlements (Basel), and the European Stability Mechanism (Luxembourg). He also served as the EU High-Level Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office in the Republic of Moldova, focusing on financial system governance and regulation. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy; a Master’s degree in Control Systems Engineering from IIT Kharagpur; and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio.
