Title : Agentic Modeling: Tool Usage and Function Calling in LLMs
Date & Time : March 07, 2025 (Friday), 02:00 PM
Venue : # 102, CDS Seminar Hall

Abstract: In this session we explore techniques that enable Large Language Models (LLMs) to overcome their inherent limitations through the use external tools and APIs. Despite their impressive capabilities, LLMs face challenges such as the inability to access up-to-date information, limited mathematical skills, and the inability to perform real-world actions like booking flights, transferring money, or sending emails.
We discuss techniques that allow LLMs to effectively leverage external tools, much like humans do, to mitigate these limitations. Specifically, we examine state-of-the-art methods for integrating various tools, such as calculators and web search, during fine-tuning. Additionally, we explore how to build models capable of utilizing functions at runtime, even if those functions were not encountered during training. Finally, we discuss benchmarks and metrics used to evaluate the performance of these models.

Bio: G P Shrivatsa Bhargav is a Research Engineer at IBM India Research Lab, where he has been contributing to NLP research and it’s application to complex real-word scenarios for the past 5 years. He earned his M. Tech. (Research) degree from CSA, IISc in 2020. Bhargav’s primary research interests lie in the fields of conversational AI, tool usage and function calling in LLMs, and agentic modeling. His past work includes publications and patents in the areas of knowledge base and reading comprehension question answering systems, entity linking, etc.

Host Faculty: Prof. Yogesh Simmhan

About: The IBM-IISc Hybrid Cloud Lab (IIHCL) hosted at IISc is curating the Cloud Computing Seminar series with guest speakers from Industry and Academia speaking about the latest technologies and research on Cloud and edge computing, distributed computing systems, and AI/ML/Big Data platforms.
